Shreyas Iyer not Sanju Samson or Shubman Gill set to become new Team India T20 captain in place of Suryakumar Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will…

Team India are set to announce the appointment of a new T20I skipper just days after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 final and barely months after winning the T20 World Cup 2026. Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer will be the new skipper of the Indian T20I team starting with the series against Ireland and England which kicks off later this month in place of Suryakumar Yadav.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) apex body met on Thursday evening and took the call to replace Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer at the helm while Rajasthan Royals superstar Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is set to make his much-awaited Team India debut. The selectors are expected to officially announce the elevation of Iyer after a selection meeting on Saturday.

This will be the second major call taken by the BCCI selection committee led by former India pacer Ajit Agarkar after they decided to replace Rohit Sharma as Indian ODI captain after he led Team India to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title and even won the ‘Player of the Match’ award in the final. Current Indian T20I skipper and Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav is unlikely to be selected in the side as well for the tours Ireland and England after being ignored for the preliminary squad of Asian Games 2026.

Iyer, who was retained for Rs 26.75 crore by Bollywood star Preity Zinta co-owned Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2026, had the unique record of leading three different franchises into the Indian Premier League final – Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings in 2025 season. Suryakumar Yadav, who will turn 36 this year, paid the price for his poor showing in the T20 World Cup 2026 where he only managed to score 242 runs at a strike-rate of 136.72 followed by lackluster showing in IPL 2026 for MI, where he only managed 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 with a strike-rate of 147.54.

What is Shreyas Iyer’s IPL captaincy record?

Shreyas Iyer has a brilliant record as captain in IPL tournament so far. In 94 matches as skipper, he has won 66 matches and lost 28 for a win-percentage of 60.43 per cent. Iyer was unlucky not to be picked for the T20 World Cup 2026 campaign after scoring 604 runs at a strike-rate of 175.07 in IPL 2025 since Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma were occupying middle-order berth.

In the IPL 2026 season, Iyer has managed to score 498 runs at a strike-rate of 168.81. Overall in T20 cricket, Iyer has managed to score 7076 runs in 254 matches at an average of 35.02 and strike-rate of 138.47 with 4 hundreds and 48 fifties to his name.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set to become youngest-ever Indian debutant

IPL 2026 Orange Cap winner Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is reportedly in line to become youngest-ever Indian debutant in international cricket at just over 15 years of age. Sooryavanshi, who scored 776 runs in IPL 2026 at a strike-rate of 237.3, is in line to make his T20I debut against Ireland or England later this month.

If he makes his debut this month, Sooryavanshi will break the record of Sachin Tendulkar in men’s cricket as the Indian legend had played his first international match against Pakistan at the age of 16 years and 205 days.

Shafali Verma is the youngest-ever women cricketer to play for India at the age of 15 years and 283 days and Sooryavanshi could break her record as well.

In WFI vs Vinesh Phogat, why SC refuses to expunge HC’s critical remarks

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to expunge the Delhi High Court’s remarks against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in its order allowing wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the Asian Games-2026 selection trials, saying disposal of the wrestling body’s petition did not mean it endorsed them.

A Bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Aravind Kumar, however, said the WFI petition challenging the HC order had become infructuous after Phogat participated in the trials on May 30 and 31 following its May 29 order.

“In view of subsequent developments, this SLP (special leave petition) is rendered infructuous. This will not be taken as having reiterated the findings and observations of the high court. The issues are kept open," the Bench said.

The HC had pulled up the WFI for issuing a show-cause notice to Phogat and termed the federation’s action as “vindictive” and “deplorable”.

As senior advocate DN Goburdhun submitted on behalf of the WFI that “she (Phogat) did not succeed but she created havoc over there”, the SC Bench said the issue had become infructuous.

Goburdhun urged the Bench to expunge adverse remarks made by the high court against the WFI. “All these observations will have to go as the matter is pending before the single Bench," he submitted. However, the Bench left it open, saying disposal of WFI petition challenging the HC’s May 22 order allowing Phogat to participate in the selection trials did not mean it endorsed the remarks.

On May 29, the Supreme Court had allowed Vinesh to participate in the selection trials. “We are not stopping, you go and participate," a Bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe said, refusing to stay the HC’s order that had granted her relief. The top court, however, had expressed reservations about the HC’s approach in allowing Phogat to participate in trials, saying “We have some questions,” even as it acknowledged her talent and the achievements at the global level.

Shreyas Iyer Most Logical Choice as India’s T20 Captain, and Gautam Gambhir Knows It

Images :X

There was considerable speculation in the media about whether Gautam Gambhir would agree to Shreyas Iyer as captain of India’s T20 team, replacing the now out-of-favour Suryakumar Yadav.

According to me, the question is a non-starter. No one can have personal likes or dislikes influencing selection calls when it comes to the national team. Let’s hypothetically assume that, irrespective of the actual situation, Gautam and Shreyas aren’t on the same page. If that’s the truth, they don’t need to have the best of terms and don’t need to go out socially. They are professionals and all they need to do is plan and win games for India. As thorough professionals, they need to work together for one cause: serving Indian cricket. Having known Gautam well, I don’t think he will ever let personal choices influence captaincy calls, and if such a thing ever happens, it is the job of the selectors to overrule and convince the coach.

In India, we give far too much credence to personal likes and dislikes. Such things shouldn’t matter in sport. At this point, Shreyas is the best candidate to lead India, and that’s how he should be viewed. National interest and nothing else should take precedence. Not Gautam, not Ajit Agarkar, and not anyone else.

Gautam and Shreyas have worked together in the past and have won the IPL title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Both will be aware of each other’s strengths, and will know each other’s weaknesses. And it isn’t the first time that two strong-willed men will share the changing room as captain and coach. Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli made themselves into a very potent combination, and then Rohit and Rahul Dravid were equally good. So, to suggest that egos could come in the way is irrelevant.

All that should matter now is performance and results. Is Shreyas scoring runs and doing so consistently? The answer is an overwhelming yes. That’s what Surya was unable to do, and that’s what has cost him the captaincy. Second, can Shreyas lead India with strategic acumen and does he have the potential to do so? As captain of Punjab Kings, he has led the team to the IPL final last year and he has also captained at the domestic level. He has held leadership positions for years now. As captain of KKR, he won a title and there can be no doubting his ability.

What is interesting in this choice of captain and coach is that it could well be the pair that carries India to the LA28 Olympic Games. And if they do make the podium, it could well be Shreyas who wears the Olympic gold medal as a historic first for India.
