England survive scare to seal 3-0 sweep against Pakistan

Joe Root led from the front as England survived a major wobble to beat Pakistan by eight wickets in the third Test at Edgbaston on Saturday, sealing a 3-0 series whitewash.

The home team, chasing just 130 to win, were in deep trouble when openers Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay were dismissed in the first over, bowled by Mohammad Abbas. Root was given a huge reprieve when he chopped onto the stumps off Mohammad Ali, only for the umpire to signal a no ball.

Root had another let-off when he edged an Abbas delivery between first and second slip. England reached their target in the 25th over, with Root unbeaten on 62 and Jordan Cox 59 not out. mchezo.co.za

Women’s Asia Cup 2026, IND-W vs SL-W: India eye redemption as Sri Lanka look to defend title

India vs Sri Lanka, Women's Asia Cup 2026 Final

Third consecutive Women’s Asia Cup final between India and Sri Lanka as the stage is set at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 13. In 2022, India registered an eight-wicket win in Sylhet, while in 2024, Sri Lanka stunned the Women in Blue with an eight-wicket win in Dambulla – their only win so far against India in five T20Is in the history of the Asia Cup.

Now, heading into this edition’s final, both teams have remained unbeaten. However, Sri Lanka seem to have better momentum and confidence after being tested in pressure situations while chasing against Bangladesh and Pakistan respectively. On both occasions, they came out of it with flying colours and are now all set to defend the title against India.

Both teams have quality spinners, which will be crucial on a typical slowish, sluggish Dubai track. But the decisive factor could turn out to be the form of the middle-order batters for both teams. India’s middle order has struggled badly, with both the openers – Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana – mainly leading the charge.

For Sri Lanka, however, their middle-order batters have been fantastic when it comes to playing quality spinners in the middle overs. The maturity and calmness they have shown so far, along with solid running between the wickets, have been fascinating to watch. It has also shown that, more than India, the defending champions have looked like a better team, playing as a unit.

Battle to watch out for: Smriti Mandhana vs Sri Lanka spinners

Smriti Mandhana has scored the second-most runs so far in this edition, scoring 154 runs in four innings, including a record-breaking century against Hong Kong, China. Hence, dismissing her as quickly as possible would be the primary objective for the defending champions.

For that, Sri Lanka’s spinners could be the best possible options, be it Chamari Athapaththu’s off-spin or the 17-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner Chamudi Praboda. Especially in the powerplay, Mandhana has been trying to take on the spinners, only to end up losing her wicket.

The same thing happened in the semi-final against Bangladesh as she went for an aerial shot, managed a top edge against Sultana Khatun and was dismissed for just two runs. The same kind of ploy could be plotted by Athapaththu and Co.

Chaminda Vaas joins Delhi Capitals camp ahead of IPL 2027, set to replace Munaf Patel

Chaminda Vaas

Former Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is set to join Delhi Capitals as their new fast-bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. According to Sportstar, the 51-year-old has already joined the team at its preparatory camp and trials in New Delhi, but the franchise is yet to make the official appointment.

Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the Indian Premier League 2026 with seven wins and seven losses under captain Axar Patel and head coach Hemang Badani. Notably, the JSW Group, one of the franchise’s co-owners, will take full administrative control and make significant changes to the team’s backroom setup.

Chaminda Vaas Joins Delhi Capitals in New Delhi

According to Sportstar, Chaminda Vaas has joined the Delhi Capitals camp in New Delhi. The former Sri Lanka pacer is involved in the team’s preparatory camp and pace trials as the franchise begins assessing its bowling options ahead of the IPL 2027 season.

Vaas is set to replace Munaf Patel as Delhi’s fast-bowling coach, although the franchise is yet to officially confirm the appointment. His experience in working with fast bowlers is expected to help Delhi build a more consistent pace attack after a disappointing bowling campaign in IPL 2026.

Chaminda Vaas Brings Vast International and Coaching Experience

Chaminda Vaas was one of Sri Lanka’s leading fast bowlers during a career that lasted more than a decade. He played 111 Tests and 322 ODIs for Sri Lanka, taking 355 and 400 wickets, respectively. He was also part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 1996 ODI World Cup.

The left-arm pacer was known for his accuracy, swing and ability to extract movement even from batting-friendly pitches. After retiring from international cricket, Vaas moved into coaching and has worked with the Sri Lankan national team as well as several franchise teams.

His experience in developing fast bowlers will be a key addition to Delhi’s coaching staff. Amit Mishra has also joined the camp as the franchise’s new spin-bowling coach. Mishra is one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history and will work with Delhi’s spin department ahead of the new season.

Delhi Capitals Complete Major Coaching Overhaul After IPL 2026 Struggles

Delhi Capitals have made major changes to their coaching setup after missing the playoffs in IPL 2026. They also struggled at home, losing five of their seven matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, including a 75-run collapse against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Delhi finished the season with three consecutive wins against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after being eliminated from playoff contention.

KL Rahul scored 593 runs at a strike rate of 174.41, including one century and five fifties. Lungi Ngidi led the bowling attack with 13 wickets, but Delhi managed only 64 wickets throughout the season, the joint-lowest tally in the league.

The franchise has replaced Hemang Badani with former India captain Sourav Ganguly as head coach, while Yuvraj Singh has joined as assistant coach. Amit Mishra and Chaminda Vaas will oversee the spin and pace departments, respectively.

Ollie Robinson and Mohammad Abbas achieve rare Test record as England whitewash Pakistan

Ollie Robinson and Mohammad Abbas ended the England-Pakistan Test series as two of the standout performers and the third Test at Edgbaston produced an unusual and rare piece of history involving the two fast bowlers.

Both pacers made an impact in the second innings of the match with Robinson putting England in a commanding position before Abbas gave Pakistan a late chance of pulling off a surprise result.

England had already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead after winning the first two Tests, but Joe Root’s side were determined to finish the series with a clean sweep. Robinson had been central to their success throughout the tour and continued his excellent run in Birmingham.

Pakistan were dismissed for just 133 in their first innings after England chose to bowl first. Josh Tongue took four wickets, while Robinson and Jofra Archer picked up three each. Mohammad Abbas was one of the few Pakistan players to offer resistance, scoring 21.

England then took complete control with the bat. Harry Brook made 75, Dan Lawrence scored 65, Jamie Smith added 69 and Emilio Gay contributed 60. Robinson also made a useful 50 as England reached 453, giving them a massive 320-run lead.

Ollie Robinson then made his biggest impact with the ball. He removed Saim Ayub with the first delivery of Pakistan’s second innings before dismissing Abdullah Shafique three balls later. Pakistan were suddenly 0-2 and in serious trouble.

Robinson finished the series with 21 wickets and was named England’s Player of the Series after consistently troubling Pakistan’s batters with movement and accuracy.

Pakistan, however, refused to go down without a fight. Shan Masood made 95 and Babar Azam scored 76, but it was debutant Razaullah who changed the mood at Edgbaston. The fast bowler smashed 81 off 63 balls, hitting nine sixes, while Abbas joined him in an extraordinary ninth-wicket stand.

Abbas made a career-best 42 and the pair added 121 for the ninth wicket. Their attack pushed Pakistan’s second-innings total to 449 and gave England a target of 130.

How England won the third Test

England’s chase got off to a terrible start when Abbas struck twice in the opening over, dismissing Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay. At 0-2, Pakistan briefly had a chance of causing a major upset. Joe Root then took control of the chase. He scored an unbeaten 62, while Jordan Cox remained not out on 59. The pair added an unbeaten stand that took England safely past the target. England finished on 130/2 to win by eight wickets and complete a 3-0 series sweep.

The victory capped a dominant series for England, who had won the first Test by an innings and 103 runs and the second by 194 runs. Robinson’s bowling was a major reason for their success, while Root’s unbeaten half-century ensured there was no late drama in the final chase.
