Can Glasgow Gold Turn Into Asian Games Glory For Indian Boxers?

With the curtains barely down on Glasgow, attention turns to a bigger stage.
Indian boxing has long been a medal mainstay at the Asian Games, with 61 medals making it the sport’s fourth-biggest contributor to India’s overall tally, behind athletics, shooting and wrestling.
The Asian Games will be a different test, with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan leading a strong Central Asian challenge alongside China, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Mongolia and Chinese Taipei.
Women’s Squad
Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg): An Asian Games debutant, Sakshi enters Japan as one of India’s leading medal prospects after defeating 48kg world champion Minakshi Hooda in the 51kg trials and edging out Nikhat Zareen.
Preeti Pawar (54kg): Commonwealth gold medallist and a 2023 Asian Games bronze medallist.
Priya Ghanghas (60kg): Commonwealth gold medallist and Asian Games debutant. Glasgow provided the 60kg boxer with a major confidence boost as she steps onto the continental stage for the first time.
Parveen Hooda (65kg): A 2023 Asian Games bronze medallist at 57kg, she arrives after a narrow 3-2 quarter-final defeat at the Commonwealth Games. Her previous Asian Games medal and experience of securing an Olympic quota for Paris 2024 make her a genuine dark-horse contender at 65kg.
Lovlina Borgohain (75kg): The squad’s most decorated boxer, with an Olympic bronze, a world title and a 2023 Asian Games silver to her name. She added another silver in Glasgow, losing 4-1 to Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree, and will be among India’s strongest medal hopes in Aichi-Nagoya.
Men’s Squad
Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (55kg): Commonwealth silver medallist, losing 5-0 to Australia’s Jye Dixon in the final. The Asian Games debutant will look to turn that Glasgow run into a first continental medal.
Sachin Siwach (60kg): Commonwealth gold medallist and one of India’s leading men’s prospects.
Sumit Kundu (70kg): Exited the Commonwealth Games in the round of 16 via split decision. An Asian Games debutant, Kundu will be looking for a deeper run in Japan after an early Glasgow exit.
Ankush Panghal (80kg): Commonwealth gold medallist and another of India’s strongest men’s medal prospects. His Glasgow title gives the Asian Games debutant plenty of momentum heading into Aichi-Nagoya.
Kapil Pokhariya (90kg): Reached the Commonwealth quarter-finals before losing to Scotland’s Robert McNulty. The Asian Games debutant now gets another opportunity to make an impact on the continental stage.
Narender Berwal (+90kg): Commonwealth silver medallist and India’s lone male boxing medallist at Hangzhou 2023, where he won bronze in the +92kg category. His combination of recent form and Asian Games experience makes him one of India’s key medal prospects.
The Hangzhou Benchmark
At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, India’s 13-member boxing contingent returned with five medals: one silver and four bronze.
Lovlina won silver in the women’s 75kg category, while Nikhat (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Narender Berwal (+92kg) claimed bronze.
That five-medal haul is the mark this squad will now look to better.
Potential Medal Contenders
Strongest gold contenders: Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal, Sakshi Chaudhary, Priya Ghanghas and Preeti Pawar all arrive as Commonwealth champions. Preeti has the added advantage of an Asian Games bronze from 2023, giving her both recent form and continental experience.
Ones to watch:
Jadumani Singh and Narender Berwal both left Glasgow with silver and will be looking to go one better.
Berwal, in particular, brings valuable Asian Games experience after his bronze in Hangzhou. Sumit and Kapil will be aiming to bounce back from their Commonwealth exits, while Parveen remains a potential dark horse given her previous Asian Games medal and international pedigree.
The challenge now is to carry that Glasgow momentum onto the Asian stage and better the five-medal haul from Hangzhou 2023.

New Zealand’s Mark Chapman shifts to casual contract to play in Big Bash League
Wellington [New Zealand], September 8 (ANI): New Zealand batter Mark Chapman has moved from a full-time contract to a casual playing deal with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) after securing an opportunity to feature in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) later this year, reported Cricinfo.
Chapman will remain available for New Zealand’s white-ball series against India in November before travelling to Australia for the BBL in December. His BBL franchise is yet to be confirmed.
The 32-year-old has joined Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert among New Zealand players on casual contracts, a category that allows them to pursue opportunities in the BBL during the New Zealand home summer.
“I’m thankful to New Zealand Cricket for their support now and throughout my career," Chapman said, according to Cricinfo.
“The upcoming India series is one all us players are really excited for, and I’m committed wholeheartedly to performing in that series."
Chapman’s BBL commitment comes at a time when the competition overlaps with New Zealand’s Test tour of Australia. However, the left-hander has not played first-class cricket since 2024 and has never represented the Black Caps in a Test.
He was called into New Zealand’s Test squad for the tour of India in 2024, while earlier this year he requested not to be considered for Test ranking when NZC finalised its initial contract list.
Chapman’s departure from the full-time contract list has opened a place for fast bowler Matt Fisher, who has been elevated to the central contract list.
New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen said the country’s demanding Test schedule against India, Australia and Sri Lanka made strengthening their pace-bowling depth a priority.
“With the heavy schedule of cricket coming up, notably the Test matches against India, Australia, and Sri Lanka, we know we’ll need good depth in our fast-bowling stocks to give the Black Caps the best chance of success," he said. “Matt is someone able to bowl that express pace which is extremely valuable to the balance of any side, so we’re excited to have him on the central contract list."
Fisher has represented New Zealand in one Test, against Zimbabwe in 2025, besides playing three ODIs and one T20I.
Chapman will now turn his attention to the India series before beginning his latest stint in the BBL, while NZC continue to manage their resources ahead of a busy international schedule. (ANI)

Shubman Gill turns 27: A look at Indian captain’s stats and milestones
New Delhi [India], September 8 (ANI): India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill turned 27 on Tuesday, marking another milestone in his journey from a highly rated young prodigy to a dependable leader.
Over the years, Gill has established himself as a key figure in India’s batting line-up while growing into his leadership role.
Born on September 8, 1999, in Punjab’s Fazilka district, Gill’s rise through the ranks has been defined by consistency across formats. From capturing the spotlight as the Player of the Tournament during India’s victorious 2018 Under-19 World Cup campaign to establishing himself as a key figure in the senior national side.
The stylish opener also holds the distinction of being the fastest player in ODI history to reach both 2,000 and 2,500 runs, alongside being the youngest player to score a double century in the 50-over format.
Gill made his ODI debut in 2019, but it was during his first Test series in Australia in 2020-21 that he announced himself on the international stage. He scored 45 and 35 on debut at the MCG, followed it up with a half-century in Sydney, and then produced a fluent 91 in India’s thrilling series-clinching victory at the Gabba, according to Cricinfo.
His maiden Test century came in Chattogram the following year. Just a month later, aged 23, Gill became the youngest batter to score an ODI double-century when he smashed 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand. He went on to score more than 350 runs during India’s run to the 2023 World Cup final and was also part of the squad that won the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Gill also played a crucial role in India’s 4-1 Test series win over England at home in 2024, scoring centuries in Visakhapatnam and Dharamsala, a 91 in Rajkot and a valuable 52 in the second innings under challenging conditions in Ranchi.
In the IPL, Gill took over as captain of Gujarat Titans in 2024 following Hardik Pandya’s departure and guided the franchise to the playoffs the next season. He continued his strong run with the bat, scoring 650 runs in the 2025 season, the fourth-highest tally that year. Gill was even more prolific in the 2026 season, finishing with 732 runs, the second-highest aggregate behind Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Coming to the Tests, after Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, Gill was named India’s Test captain for the 2025 tour of England.
Gill enjoyed a memorable Test series against England. He amassed 754 runs at an impressive average of 75.40, including four centuries and a career-best 269. Gill helped India secure a 2-2 draw away from home. His tally was the second-highest ever by a captain in a Test series, behind Australian great Don Bradman’s 810 runs in the 1936-37 Ashes.
Gill recently led India to a 1-0 win in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka last month.
Overall, Gill has built an impressive record across formats, establishing himself as one of India’s leading batters. In 43 Tests, he has scored 3,043 runs at an average of 43.47, including 11 centuries and nine fifties.
His ODI numbers are even more striking, with 3,379 runs from 67 matches at an outstanding average of 60.33, including nine centuries and 20 half-centuries, with a best of 208.
In T20Is, Gill has accumulated 869 runs in 36 appearances at a strike rate of 138.59, including a century. (ANI)

‘You are not alone Nepal’, Flood victims to be remembered by clubs before every UEFA Champions League MD 1 fixture
Elite European clubs will pay a tribute to the lives lost in the tragic floods that took place in Nepal earlier this month before every single matchday one fixture of the upcoming UEFA Champions League 2026-27 season which kicks-off today.
UEFA has announced that a moment of silence will be observed before every Champions League match in Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 league phase.
A banner carrying the message “You are not alone Nepal” will also be displayed at stadiums across Europe.
The tribute comes after flash floods struck Nepal on August 26. The disaster, which followed a glacier collapse in the country’s border region with China, caused widespread destruction and left thousands of people dead or missing. Rescue teams have continued their search for survivors as authorities recover bodies from the affected areas.
UEFA said the gesture was meant to show support for the people affected by the tragedy. The organization’s president, Aleksander Ceferin, said the entire European football family would stand together before the matches to express its condolences.
“The entire European football family will stand together before this week’s matches to express our deepest condolences and our support to the people of Nepal,” Ceferin said. “We wish them strength and resilience as they continue to recover from this tragedy and its aftermath,” Ceferin concluded.
The tribute will take place before all 18 matches scheduled across the three days of matchday one. It will be a reminder that football’s reach extends beyond the pitch and that the sport is for everyone. Nepal is a football loving nation and that’s why this gesture holds plenty of significance.
