Diego Forlán named Uruguay’s interim head coach

Former Uruguay striker Diego Forlán has been appointed as the interim head coach of Uruguay’s senior men’s national team, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) announced on Thursday. The 47-year-old will also oversee the Under-20 side as Uruguay begins rebuilding following a disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.

Forlán replaces Marcelo Bielsa, whose tenure ended after Uruguay failed to progress beyond the group stage of the World Cup. Bielsa, who took charge in May 2023, won 15 of his 39 matches before stepping down.

The former Manchester United, Villarreal and Atlético Madrid forward will immediately begin work with the Under-20 team and will also lead the senior side during the international friendlies scheduled between September and November. The AUF is expected to appoint a permanent head coach either later this year or at the beginning of 2027.

In a statement, the AUF described Forlán as “a role model, icon and emblem of an unforgettable generation”, adding that he returns to contribute his experience and leadership from the technical area.

Forlán enjoyed a distinguished international career, scoring 36 goals in 112 appearances for Uruguay. He played a key role in the country’s run to the 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-finals and won the tournament’s Golden Ball as its best player. A year later, he helped Uruguay lift the 2011 Copa América title.

Since retiring from professional football in 2019, Forlán has had coaching spells with Uruguayan clubs Peñarol and Atenas. His appointment marks his first role in charge of the national team, with Uruguay hoping one of its greatest players can help restore confidence after a disappointing World Cup campaign.
