ICC Chair Jay Shah has described the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy as “an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket” as India prepares to host the landmark six-team tournament across Mumbai and Vadodara from February 14 to 28.
“As the inaugural edition of the tournament, it will bring together the best teams in the world in an intense, high-quality competition,” Shah said, as reported by NDTV. He also highlighted the tournament’s role in providing greater incentive for teams to, an opportunity to rise through the rankings and compete for a prominent place on the global stage.
Shah also stressed the significance of having a major ICC women’s event every year and the momentum it could create for the sport.
“With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players and its fans around the world,” he mentioned.
The inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy was originally scheduled to be hosted by Sri Lanka but has now been moved to India as Sri Lanka Cricket continues to grapple with governance issues.
The ICC said it assessed three candidates — Bangladesh, India and South Africa — “against its established host evaluation criteria before recommending India as the replacement host.” The ICC came to a conclusion regarding this on September 2nd.
The Cricket Club of India (CC) in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium will host the tournament, which will feature Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
The six teams qualified based on their positions in the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings as of the July 6 qualification cut-off date. They will play a round-robin league, with the top two sides advancing to the final on February 28.
