63% Brazil-India Tickets Bought Outside Bengal, Kolkata Braces for Football Tourism Boom

The excitement around Brazil’s much-anticipated international friendly against India in Kolkata has spread well beyond West Bengal, with fans from across the country driving a major share of ticket sales.

As many as 63 per cent of the tickets sold so far have been purchased by supporters from outside West Bengal, underlining the national interest surrounding the October fixture at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. The influx is expected to give Kolkata’s tourism and hospitality sectors a significant boost, with fans from several states likely to travel to the city for the historic encounter.

Tickets went live at 4pm on Thursday on the District app, but the huge demand immediately put the platform under pressure. The app crashed soon after the sale opened, and when access was restored three minutes later, the virtual queue had already crossed 8,500. Lower-priced tickets disappeared rapidly, with several slabs between Rs 999 and Rs 3,500 selling out within minutes.

Around 40,000 tickets have reportedly been made available for the Brazil game, despite the VYBK having a capacity of approximately 65,000. Prices range from Rs 999 to Rs 15,000 for VIP seats. The organisers are expected to earn around Rs 30 crore from ticket sales for the Brazil fixture alone.

The match carries added significance for Indian football. It will be India’s first FIFA Tier 1 international fixture against Brazil, with Uruguay also scheduled to face India in Kolkata. That brings the fixture under strict FIFA protocols and operational requirements. Any major breach or failure to comply with the prescribed regulations could result in substantial financial penalties for the local organisers.

The All India Football Federation, under president Kalyan Chaubey, has already begun preparations to ensure that the arrangements meet the required international standards. Security, crowd management, media operations, venue protocols and match-day logistics are expected to receive particular attention.

The tickets are being issued as M-Tickets, with supporters able to enter directly using the QR code on the District app. The QR code will be activated at 2pm on match day.

Brazil are expected to arrive in Kolkata on September 30 from Australia, where they will play two friendlies. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti is scheduled to announce his squad on September 9.
