Karun Nair’s departure in the middle of the ongoing Duleep Trophy final and his subsequent involvement in a match in Bengaluru have left the South Zone team management red-faced.
Karun, who wasn’t picked in the playing XI for the final between South Zone and East Zone, left Chennai on Sunday. Today, he was playing against Chhattisgarh in a KSCA tournament in Bengaluru, where he scored a century.
In the evening, he quoted a post on X (formerly Twitter) by a journalist and said: “Inexplicable would be an understatement.” He accompanied the post with a laughing emoji. The original post by the journalist mentioned how it was “inexplicable” to leave Karun out of the second straight Duleep Trophy fixture by South Zone. The India discard wasn’t picked in the XI in the semi-final against North Zone either.
Earlier, South Zone coach Vikram Verma attributed Karun’s departure to “personal reasons”. “He went back due to personal reasons at home,” Verma told reporters. “He mailed us and took the permission for his travel due to family reasons.”
Karun, who scored 699 runs in the 2025-26 Ranji season for Karnataka, took a flight to Bengaluru on Sunday evening.
